This One Mindset Shift Can Transform Your Life and Business
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
In today’s episode, I dive into a game-changing realization that came to me over a whirlwind weekend of unexpected house hunting. What started as a casual virtual tour led to a rollercoaster of decisions, offers, and ultimately, valuable life and business lessons.
What's Inside:
- The Unexpected Journey: Hear how a spontaneous decision to explore a house listing turned into a full-blown offer by the end of the day. It’s a story of rapid decisions, navigating the pre-approval process, and dealing with the ups and downs of multiple offers.
- Mindset Shifts: I share the transformative power of adopting a learning mindset throughout this process. It wasn’t just about buying a house; it was about embracing each step as a learning opportunity, which is something we can truly adopt in all facets of our lives.
- Embracing Beginner’s Mind: Learn why starting something new, with little to no knowledge, can actually be your greatest advantage.
- Dealing with Disappointment: Discover how not getting the house was still a positive experience for us.
- Takeaways for Listeners: Whether you’re running a business, contemplating a big life decision, or just curious about adopting a more flexible mindset, there’s something in this episode for you.

Welcome back to the Wandering CEO podcast. I am so excited about today's episode. And I know I say that pretty much every episode, I'm always like, I'm so excited about the episode. And that's true. But this one I'm really, really jazzed up about because we're gonna talk about this one mindset shift that can really change the game in your life and your business. And the reason I'm so pumped about it is because this came from an experience that I just had this weekend. So the time we're reporting this podcast, it's Sunday.
The podcast episode gets released on Monday and this whole learning, this whole realization came to me over the weekend because of this experience I'm about to share with you. So I think it's really, really gonna resonate with you because I feel like my eyes were just like totally open to this new mindset shift that I can do. And so I'm just really, really excited to share with you and I hope that it resonates. In fact, I know it's gonna resonate with you. So let me give you a little bit of context. On Friday,
And so like I mentioned, this is Sunday on Friday, we decided to do a virtual tour of a house that we were interested in. And so to give you a little bit more background, we weren't even house hunting at this time. So we've talked about buying a house, but it's been kind of this like nebulous idea, like, okay, one day in the future, we're going to buy a house. You know, we definitely weren't in the position yet to be like, okay, now we're, you know, we're pre -approved. We're going to make an offer on a house. None of that. So we do a virtual tour of a house on Friday, just because we saw the listing and it seemed really interesting.
And we went from doing that virtual tour in the morning to actually putting in an offer by 10pm that night. So in that day, we had so many things that we had to go through. We, uh, you know, we obviously did the virtual tour. We had to see if we could get pre -approved for a loan. I had to talk to my landlord to see if we could get out of our lease, potentially to move into this house. I mean, we went from.
Priyanka (01:50.476)
not even sure that we were capable of putting in an offer because we weren't actually looking at a house to putting in an offer. And so the reason I am telling you about this is because then the whole weekend was just such a roller coaster. We went from putting in the offer to not hearing back for a while to there actually being multiple offers. And then we having to put in another offer to bank the highest bid. And so I'm telling you all that because the mindset I had,
for this process is truly a game changer. So I decided to make this all a learning opportunity because this was our first time ever putting in an offer on a house, right? And so I was like, let me just learn as much as I possibly can. And that was like mindset shift. I'm not even sure if I consciously made that shift, but I think if you make it consciously, it can be such a game changer because here's the thing, I learned so much in a period of 48 hours.
that I didn't know before. And the whole time when we haven't heard back, when we have to change our offer, when we have to add an expiration clause to our offer, all of these things, I kept telling my fiance Eric, I was like, this is so much fun. This is so exciting. And he was like, you are crazy. This is not fun at all. And I was like, it is fun. And you want to know why? It's because I'm learning so much. And I think this is such an important experience to share with you because a few things that I realized. One is,
You can learn so much by actually doing the thing. So if I had just sat and I had researched, you know, home buying process or putting in an offer, like what all you need to do. One, I think that's just kind of boring. Like I probably would have lost interest and it would have taken me so much longer than actually trying because in those 48 hours I had to learn on the go and.
you know, every little like twist and turn that happened over the weekend, I was able to learn something from it. And this obviously isn't just about a home buying process. This can apply to literally everything else in your life. And now I know exactly what to do going into the next one, because by the way, we didn't get the house. We were bid out by a different offer. And I'll tell you how that felt in just a moment. But the reason why this was such a positive experience, not only did I learn so much like I just mentioned,
Priyanka (04:09.1)
But I felt like I couldn't take a misstep. I couldn't lose here because I was a complete beginner. I don't know anything. And so there really weren't any quote unquote mistakes that could be made because how could I make a mistake if I don't even know what I'm doing? Right? So I framed every little thing as a learning opportunity. So like, for example, we didn't put an expiration clause in our original offer. And then I, you know,
in talking to my parents and doing some more research, I realized, okay, actually, that's like something that would be really great to put in there. And, you know, if I hadn't been framing this as a, hey, let's see how much I can possibly learn in this experience. And also, by the way, I wanted the house. So I was like, let's see if I can learn a lot and also hopefully come out of this with a house. But instead of being like, oh, you, you know, you idiot or something. I mean, by the way, don't ever talk to yourself like that. I'm just giving you an example. But instead of.
getting down on myself by being like, oh, you should have realized that you should have put that expiration clause in your original offer. I was like, I don't know anything. And so now I just learned one more thing, like check, tick, this can, I can add this to my tool belt. And you know, the other piece of this too is when we made our final offer. So when we had to go into kind of that bidding process and, you know, put our best foot forward, it felt so great because I know we did our best.
And I know we felt good about it. And that was also really, really important because we put it out there into the universe. We were like, okay, this is our best foot forward. This is like the best offer we can possibly make. We feel good about this. You know, we've learned all these things that we've now incorporated into this offer. And when we didn't get it, it, I mean, obviously it's like a little disappointing. I'm a human being, but it didn't devastate us. Even though we really, really wanted this place. The reason it didn't devastate us is because I was like,
We did our best. Like we literally did everything we possibly could. And look at how much I learned. I learned, I knew if you had asked me on, you know, before this weekend, if you had asked me like, how do you put an offer in on a house? I'd be like, I have no idea. Google it, go look somewhere else. And now I can tell you all the little bits and pieces. And now I have a strategy for moving forward.
Priyanka (06:17.868)
So to me, that's a huge win. Yes, I would have loved to have come out of the weekend with a house because also that would have been just absolutely nuts. Like, can you imagine not even thinking about buying a house on one day and then the next day being like, Oh, oops, I actually have a house. And you know, that sounds even crazier than it actually is. Like I said, we've been talking about this, you know, we'd been putting the money aside. We just weren't actually in the process. So I want to make that very clear because I know that's a very privileged thing to be able to do.
to go from not really officially house hunting to actually putting in an offer. So I just wanna recognize that and acknowledge that and share with you that it's not that crazy or out of the blue because we were thinking about it. We just thought it would be a little bit further down the road. But I came out of the weekend going, all right, I have like, it's a win -win, whether or not we get the house, don't get the house. I mean, that's obviously the cherry on top. But now that I have learned so, so much from this process,
I realized how important that mindset was to me and how much we don't actually have that mindset because if we go into anything we're doing, recognizing that we're a beginner and in fact doubling down on the fact that we're a beginner and going, okay, I am just going to try this thing. I'm going to learn as much as I possibly can so that the next time I do this or the next step I take, I'm going to be even better. Imagine how much better.
everything we did in life would be, right? Because it's like, okay, what do you have to lose then? If you're gonna learn something from this and you're gonna get something out of this anyways, like how could you possibly lose? And also then I feel like there's sometimes shame involved with being a beginner and shame involved in not knowing what you don't know. And I think if you really think about it from this perspective and you're kind of like, no, I'm gonna be a sponge, I'm gonna take it all in, you kind of take ownership.
of being a beginner, you take that back, you get to control the narrative and you get to be like, no, being a beginner is actually a really great thing because that means I have so far to go. I have so much I could possibly learn and so much I can continue to apply as I, you know, as I start to become more well versed in a process, there's so much value in actually being a beginner. And I think we need to embrace that a little bit more. And if we do,
Priyanka (08:42.124)
think about how much less scary than it feels to be a beginner, right? So I don't know, I was really jazzed about that. I felt like that was a huge epiphany for me. And because I think of us like we're girlfriends, I really had to get on here and just share with you right away as I'm thinking this, as I'm feeling it. By the way, we just found out we didn't get the house maybe an hour ago. So this is all really raw and fresh, but as you can tell, I'm excited about it and that's not normally.
how someone who didn't get the house that they wanted would sound, right? And it's just because of that framing. So let's wrap this up and put a little bow on it. Framing everything that you do in your life, in your business, whatever it may be, if you frame it as a learning opportunity, it can really truly be a game changer because you're gonna learn a ton. It makes it less scary because what do you have to lose?
If all you want to get out of this is you want to learn something, right? Like we're talking about not being so attached to the outcome. We're just going into a situation going, I need to just learn something from this situation and I need to do my best. And we're going to see what the outcome is going to be. And that also helps you feel like you can't make a mistake because you're a beginner. And if you do, okay, you may, I mean, you didn't really make a mistake because you didn't know any better. And now you have more information. Now you are better prepared for the future.
And then the last part of that, and it kind of ties into what I was just talking about, where you aren't as tied to the outcome. You have the knowledge that you did your best, right? Because you're gathering the information as you go along, you're doing your absolute best. And if it doesn't work out in your favor, that's okay, because you know better for the next time. And the next time could be the time that goes your way. So I hope this was the episode you really needed to hear right now. I hope this was helpful. As always, if you found it helpful,
